2nd Assembly District Update: April 12, 2023

Referendums Passed – What Does This Mean?

Welcome back! If you’ve been keeping up with the election results at all, you’ll know that both bail reform referendum questions passed and are now actively in effect. These results now give judges more flexibility to place pre-trial restrictions on a defendant and to determine the amount of cash bail required for violent crimes.

The third reform question asked whether an able-bodied adult should be required to look for work in order to receive taxpayer-funded benefits. This was a non-binding, advisory question, and received roughly 80% of votes in favor. With that being said, the legislature has heard the people loud and clear and is now pushing welfare reform legislation to make sure welfare benefits and taxpayer dollars are not being abused.

Listening Sessions Announced

Get excited! I will be hosting two listening sessions in the district next month! The locations/times will be:

Saturday, May 20th, at 10:30 AM at the Lester Public Library in Two Rivers (Community Room) and Monday, May 22nd, at 5:30 PM at the De Pere Library (Kress Branch – Emil Gail Fischer Room).

I will also be attending Senator André Jacque’s listening session this coming Monday (4/17) at the Two Rivers City Hall (1717 E. Park St., Two Rivers) at 3:30 PM.

The intention behind a listening session is to understand any opportunities or challenges surrounding a topic as community members perceive them. Anyone is welcome to attend the listening session and contribute ideas that they would like to bring to the attention of the state. I hope to see you there!

ICYMI – Utility Shutoff Moratorium Ends April 15

State and utility officials are urging residents behind on their heating bills to set up payment plans or apply for state aid before the winter moratorium on utility shutoffs ends April 15. Customers behind on their bills should call their local utilities directly. They are required to offer deferred payment agreements, or DPAs, to homeowners who cannot pay in full. Those having trouble paying their heating bills might be eligible for financial assistance through the state Department of Administration’s Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program, or WHEAP. The annual winter moratorium on utility shutoffs lasts from Nov. 1 to April 15 and prohibits all utility providers from disconnecting residential heating services even if their customers haven’t paid their bills. Customers who are behind on their bills may be at risk of disconnection if payment arrangements are not established by April 15.
How To Get Help with Past-Due Heating Bills
To set up a payment plan, call your local utility. Here are the state’s largest:

  • Alliant Energy, 800-255-4268
  • Madison Gas and Electric, 800-245-1125
  • Superior Water, Light and Power, 800-227-7957
  • We Energies, 800-842-4565
  • Wisconsin Public Service Corp., 800-450-7260
  • Xcel Energy, 800-895-4999

Customers who cannot reach an agreement with their utility can file a complaint with the Wisconsin Public Service Commission at 608-266-2001 or 800-225-7729 or at go.madison.com/complaint.

To apply for state aid to pay past-due bills, visit energybenefit.wi.gov or call 800-506-5596.
