19th Senate District Update: June 9, 2023

Listening Session

Due to the demand of our listening sessions, I have organized an additional session for early June. I hope to see you there!

It was a busy week in-district and in the legislature! I was happy to participate in several meetings and events in-district. I’m looking forward to this Saturday where I will be hosting a listening session and participating in the Appleton Flag Day parade!

Additionally, the Senate convened for a floor session this Wednesday. I was happy to vote in support of bills that streamline government processes and cut red tape! To view the full floor schedule, go here.

I had two resolutions that I authored passed the floor this week, the first is to designate Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day and a resolution proclaiming Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week.

I also had three bills go through public hearings in the Assembly:

  1. Assembly Bill 299 tightens ballot security for our service members
  2. Assembly Bill 228 will change the name of the earned income tax credit to the child care tax credit
  3. Assembly Bill 86 largely ends the unfair practice of scholarship displacement. Some universities have taken away scholarship money awarded to students if they earn a third-party grant or scholarship.

Budget Update

This week the Joint Finance Committee held one executive session, voting to:

  • Invest in school safety, efforts to prevent internet crimes against children, Treatment and Diversion programming, and the forensic crime lab
  • Added six Licensing Processing staff positions for DSPS, the state’s licensing agency
  • Add six Call Center positions for DSPS

This week, Senate and Assembly leadership, along with Governor Evers have announced a tentatively agreed upon Shared Revenue bill. This includes a base increase of at least 20% for nearly every municipality in Wisconsin, and closes the gap in funding between smaller and larger municipalities. When the original formula was created, more than twenty-five years ago, it heavily favored larger municipalities than the more rural communities.

Over the next few weeks, I look forward to providing more updates on this historic piece of legislation!
