Appleton, WI News Updates

Appleton City Council Update: June 7, 2026

The Appleton Flag Day Parade is June 13 -- and it is an American tradition! The annual event is always held on the second Saturday in June. Fox Cities citizens have honored “Old Glory” since 1950, making the Appleton Flag Day Parade the nation’s oldest. This celebration annually attracts hundreds of participants and more than 50,000 spectators to Appleton.

The Coming Grand Chute Property Tax Increase

If Grand Chute will be significantly smaller in the future, due to annexations by Appleton, it calls into question the need for the size of the municipal complex expansion as planned today. A better solution would be to plan for the use of leased interim space to meet current space needs.

IRG Analysis: New DPI Report Shows Wisconsin Schools Break All-Time Staffing Record

Wisconsin public schools now employ 1 adult for every 7 students, breaking the all-time record from 2025. Wisconsin public schools employ 113,171 staff in 2026. Unfortunately, Wisconsin educates just 791,794 public-school students, the fewest since 1991. Educating fewer students with more staff is a major cause of school referenda.

Thrivent TID Is a Pancake with Two Sides

I have questions about the Wilden Portfolio Park development (at Thrivent) and the proposal that Appleton create a 14th Tax Incremental District (TID) to help incentivize this development. The Appleton City Council should consider both sides of this pancake. The colorful sprinkles presented by Thrivent’s request to create a Tax ID are all obtainable without a TID.

A Door-Knocking Conversation

In the end, we agreed that we had different political views and that they wouldn’t sign my paperwork. We wished each other a Merry Christmas and shook hands. I left the conversation stating that this was why I had a Charlie Kirk sign. We were able to have a frank exchange of ideas, not get upset with each other and still part on good terms.

Divided Government Means Spending Increases, Incremental Victories, and Unaddressed Problems

The 2025-2026 legislative session reflected the ongoing reality of divided government, producing a mix of incremental victories and significant unfinished business. While lawmakers approved reforms to protect children, clean up PFAS contamination, expand healthcare access through advanced practice registered nurses, and place voter ID in the Wisconsin Constitution, major structural reforms remained unresolved.

“The key to wisdom is this: constant and frequent questioning, for by doubting we are led to question, by questioning we arrive at the truth.”

A Reply to Senator Chris Kapenga

I am more than skeptical of governments changing tax systems--i.e. moving from a state income tax to another form of taxation. It's always a shell game: "How can we fool the voters today?" Tell me, has any of these types of changes (anywhere) resulted in LESS TAX DOLLARS being removed from the pockets of taxpayers? That is what the taxpayer expects. But it never happens. It's all a ruse put on by politicians to gain a big bunch of credit for doing NOTHING!

Goreham Delivers Three-Part Presentation to Fox Valley Initiative

At the June 1 meeting of Fox Valley Initiative, Steve Goreham—executive director of the Climate Science Coalition of America, policy advisor to The Heartland Institute, and author of four books on climate change—gave a fact-filled, common-sense presentation discussing climate change alarmism. He presented data showing much of climate change, if not all, is a natural phenomenon.
