19th Senate District Update: May 3, 2024

Week five of “what we got done for you!”

One change that will help bring transparency to Wisconsin’s university admissions practices is Senate Bill 367, now 2023 Act 95.

Act 95 sets clear goals for our kids as they apply for college. Any student ranked in the top of their class will have a spot at one of our universities, as detailed in the bill. This also includes homeschool students who have top standardized test scores.

Our promise to Wisconsin’s “best and brightest” just got stronger with the passage of this critical legislation. I look forward to continue working with stakeholders to strengthen it in future sessions.

This week, I also had the pleasure of meeting with students from Valley New School (VNS), an innovate lab school within the Appleton Area School District, who presented their projects at coffee shops on College Avenue on May 1, 2024. VNS is a project-based learning school where students create projects and conduct research on academic areas of interest. I spoke with students about their projects, from a Spanish shipwreck off the coast of Florida, to the meaning of Yin & Yang in Chinese culture, to the history of the Hearthstone Historic House in Appleton, to the evolution of Godzilla in film.

My staff and I were also happy to meet with:

  • Fox Crossing Fire Department
  • Manawa Rural Fire Department
  • Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources
  • Folks at the Wisconsin Operating Engineers Training Center
  • Wisconsin Association of School Nurses
  • Appleton Area School District Superintendent

Next week, I look forward to many more meetings in our area!
