19th Senate District Update: October 20, 2023

Senate Floor and Committee

This week, the Wisconsin State Senate convened for a floor session. We took up executive appointments, approving well over 400 appointees since the Governor took office. I was also happy to see four of my authored bills voted out of the Senate:

  • SB83: requiring a statement of estimated interest on the amount of bonds when asking a referendum
  • SB362: allowing electronic transmission of employer-sponsored health insurance policies
  • SB373: relating to selling and fitting over-the-counter hearing aids
  • SB419: letting hearing instrument specialists practice cerumen management

I also joined the Committee on Mental Health for a public hearing.

My staff and I also were able to spend time with folks from:

  • Municipal Electric Utilities of Wisconsin (special thank you to Menasha Utilities for stopping by!)
  • Moms Demand Action
  • Coolidge Elementary School (Neenah)
  • Outagamie County
  • Safe Roads Coalition
  • Wisconsin Association of Family and Children Agencies
  • Others from around the district – please reach out if you’d like to meet!

Wisconsin’s Earn While You Learn Health Care Programs

Wisconsin’s healthcare sector, like many other facets of our economy, is struggling to find workers. According to a report from the Department of Workforce Development, Wisconsin could find itself 20,000 nurses short by the year 2040.

WisCaregiver Careers is funded through the federal and state government which covers the cost of obtaining a CNA certification for Wisconsin Nursing Homes. There is a $500 bonus for those who remain employed for six months.

SSM Health is a Catholic non-profit healthcare system that covers the Midwest. This program offers CNA training which is open to the public.

UW Health offers a registered apprenticeship for medical assistants. Apprentices that complete this program will then be eligible to take the Clinical Certified Medical Assistant credentialing program.

A recent Post Crescent article further explains more programs and organizations that offer free or low-cost programs to train more health care professionals! Read more here.
