19th Senate District Update: October 6, 2023

Healthcare Affordability & Accessibility

This week, the Senate Committee on Health took action on several items, including:

  • Recommending passage of the APRN Modernization Act, boosting access to affordable healthcare in underserved communities
  • Recommending Kirsten Johnson as Secretary of the Department of Health Services
  • Holding a public hearing on visitation rights for family members in healthcare facilities

I was also able to deliver the weekly radio address this week about my bill that will cut taxes and “Return Your Surplus!” I’m proud to lead the fight in the Senate to help hardworking families keep more of their money.

I also had the opportunity to hold a press conference on making the Monarch Wisconsin’s State Butterfly. Former State Senator Gary Goyke and former State Treasurer Jack Voight have been instrumental in making this a reality!

Wisconsin’s Earn While You Learn Health Care Programs

Wisconsin’s healthcare sector, like many other facets of our economy, is struggling to find workers. According to a report from the Department of Workforce Development, Wisconsin could find itself 20,000 nurses short by the year 2040.

WisCaregiver Careers is funded through the federal and state government which covers the cost of obtaining a CNA certification for Wisconsin Nursing Homes. There is a $500 bonus for those who remain employed for six months.

SSM Health is a Catholic non-profit healthcare system that covers the Midwest. This program offers CNA training which is open to the public.

UW Health offers a registered apprenticeship for medical assistants. Apprentices that complete this program will then be eligible to take the Clinical Certified Medical Assistant credentialing program.

A recent Post-Crescent article further explains more programs and organizations that offer free or low-cost programs to train more health care professionals! Read more here.
