19th Senate District Update: September 29, 2023

Tax Cuts and More!

Senator Julian Bradley (R-Franklin) and Senator Rachael discuss their tax proposal that will “Return Your Surplus.” Click here to watch the video.

It was another busy week in Madison and around the district!

On Tuesday, I testified before the Universities and Revenue Committee on Senate Bill 435, the “Returning Your Surplus” tax cut that I’ve authored with Representative Dave Steffen. This crucial piece of legislation will put an average of over $750 back in to your pocket and make up to $100,000 of retirement income tax-free. I’m hopeful that Governor Evers will do the right thing and stand with taxpayers and our grandparents.

Three other bills I authored moved through the public hearing process this week, including:

  • Senate Bill 39: adding the opportunity for voters to receive text notifications regarding their absentee ballot.
  • Senate Bill 83: giving voters the tools to understand the true cost of referenda, including interest in the total ask.
  • Senate Bill 261: Making sure tanning facilities follow best practices and protect minors.

On Wednesday, I chaired the Senate Committee on Health. We took up executive appointments to the Medical Examining Board, the Dentistry Examining Board, and DHS Secretary-designee Kirsten Johnson!

I also had the pleasure of speaking with former State Senator Gary Goyke and Jack Voight who have been outspoken advocates for making the Monarch our state butterfly. I’m proud to lead that bill in the senate!

In addition, my office and I had productive meetings with:

  • Susan G. Komen
  • State Monarch Butterfly Legislative Briefing
  • Appleton Armory
  • Advocates for “Final Five” voting
  • A PFAS Sequestration company
  • Several constituents

Wisconsin’s Earn While You Learn Health Care Programs

Wisconsin’s health care sector, like many other facets of our economy, is struggling to find workers. According to a report from the Department of Workforce Development, Wisconsin could find itself 20,000 nurses short by the year 2040.

WisCaregiver Careers is funded through the federal and state government which covers the cost of obtaining a CNA certification for Wisconsin Nursing Homes. There is a $500 bonus for those who remain employed for six months.

SSM Health is a Catholic non-profit healthcare system that covers the Midwest. This program offers CNA training which is open to the public.

UW Health offers a registered apprenticeship for medical assistants. Apprentices that complete this program will then be eligible to take the Clinical Certified Medical Assistant credentialing program.

A recent Post-Crescent article further explains more programs and organizations that offer free or low-cost programs to train more health care professionals! Read more here.
