2nd Assembly District Update: December 13, 2023

Two Election Reform Bills Signed into Law!

Last week was a very exciting week for the Sortwell office. We had multiple bills signed into law!

WI Act 52 serves two primary goals: to maintain accountability and avoid any future misuse of campaign funds by public office candidates, and to redistribute donations back to individuals. Once someone is adjudicated guilty of certain campaign finance laws, this bill would require the court to order the person’s campaign account be dissolved and to appoint a new treasurer who will only be allowed to return the campaign funds to donors or donate the funds to the common school fund in accordance with the dissolution order.

WI Act 53 states if a municipality broadcasts canvassing proceedings live in any election, including by live stream on the Internet, the municipality must record the broadcast, and the municipal clerk must retain the recording for 22 months. This allows the public to have another mechanism to verify that a part of our election process was conducted fairly.

It has been a pleasure to work with Representative Ortiz-Velez (D) on this bipartisan legislation, and I am thrilled that Governor Evers signed two fantastic election reform bills into law.

Study Committee Legislation Signed into Law

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers signed into law two bills promoted by the Study Committee on Occupational Licenses, led by State Rep. Shae Sortwell.

Last year, I co-chaired the Study Committee on Occupational Licenses. I was concerned with the significant backlog that was building up within the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) and wanted to get as involved as I could to figure out timely, logical solutions. During the study committee, we saw a bipartisan consensus for most of the legislation introduced, and I am happy to share that two of the bills that stemmed from the committee were also signed into law last week.

WI Act 55 ratifies and enters Wisconsin into the Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact, which allows a speech-language pathologist or audiologist licensed in one member state to obtain a “compact privilege” to practice in a remote state without obtaining a license in that remote state.

WI Act 56 ratifies and enters Wisconsin into the Counseling Compact, which provides for the ability of a professional counselor to become eligible to practice in other compact states.

It is very exciting to be present and involved in the creation of a bill, to see it pass both chambers, and to witness it signed into law. I am very grateful for the support both pieces of legislation have received and am hopeful to see them positively impact Wisconsin’s workforce.
