Standing Up to Tyranny

Happy Valentine’s Day! Although Valentine’s Day is a great day to show love and appreciation for the ones in your life, I also like to take a little time to share why we even celebrate Valentine’s Day in the first place, and that reason is because of St. Valentine!

St. Valentine was a Roman priest who defied tyranny to stand up for what was right and holy. He encouraged marriage within the Christian church, at a time when there was an edict that prohibited the marriage of young people, and would marry couples secretly regardless of the consequences. He laid his life on the line for what he held sacred and true and eagerly shared the key ingredient for any successful marriage. Jesus!

Session 1/25

Wisconsin State Rep. Shae Sortwell addresses the General Assembly on January 25, 2024.

Once again, in this week’s update, we’re going to go over a previous floor session we have not yet covered. In order to do so, we’re going to back it up to Thursday, January 25th, when the Assembly met for session. In this e-update, we’re going to focus on the medical and sporting bills that passed during this floor period, and we’ll touch base on the additional bills in the upcoming weeks.

Healthcare Legislation
AB 154 (SB 145) will address and help the serious provider shortage we are currently facing by creating the APRN Modernization Act.

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) are registered nurses with advanced knowledge, degrees, and skills. They include nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and certified nurse midwives. Creating the APRN Modernization Act will help provide regulatory flexibility and assist with removing barriers to allow these qualified providers to practice within their scope in the areas where they are needed most.

AB 562 (SB 526) adds two rural members, licensed below the paramedic level and serving in a volunteer department, to the state EMS board.

AB 687 (SB 672) allows the Department of Health Services (DHS) to enter into a value-based purchasing agreement with a drug manufacturer for purposes of the Medical Assistance program.

AB 690 (SB 671) would allow a CNA student to be hired as a full-time or part-time employee without first taking their certification test. They must be supervised by a preceptor, would still have to complete 16 hours of classroom training, and be enrolled in an approved training program before being employed as a nurse aide.

AB 914 would allow schools in Wisconsin to stock bronchodilators (the medication dispensed by asthma inhalers) to treat students suffering from an asthma attack.

Sporting Legislation
AB 216 (SB 217) would allow people who own ATV’s/UTV’s to seat two people without facing legal concerns.

AB 34 amends current restrictions related to baiting deer in counties with confirmed positive tests for CWD or bovine TB.

AB 137 (SB 139) requires that the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources include an exact number for the wolf population goal in their wolf management plan.

AB 217 (SB 216) addresses auxiliary lights used on ATVs/UTVs known as “whip” lights.

AB 270 would codify in statute a requirement for individuals under the age of 18 to attend an in-person field training session prior to receiving hunter education certification.

AB 430 (SB 411) makes it so fillets of fish would not have to meet various size limits so long as the fisherman has a picture of the record of the fish before it was filleted.

AB 512 repeals a current Department of Natural Resources (DNR) administrative code provision that generally prohibits a person from training their hunting dogs from May 1 to June 30 in a portion of the state north of certain east-west highways.
