Last night was the 2025 State Budget Address, where, once again, Governor Evers put forth a proposal that would grow the size of government, increase taxes, and expand government overreach.
With nearly $2 billion in the rainy-day fund, along with a significant one-time surplus caused by Governor Evers’ veto of meaningful tax relief last budget, we are well-positioned to send money back to taxpayers while investing in key government functions like building transportation infrastructure. However, rather than giving taxpayers more of their hard-earned money back, Governor Evers has created countless new ways to spend it, including expanding welfare, raising taxes, and creating new benefits for illegal immigrants.
Governor Evers proposal on a myriad of programs would increase spending by nearly 20%. Overall, including state and federal funds, the budget would total nearly $119 billion, an increase of about 20%. When looking only at state funds, it would spend about $50.5 billion, an increase of 18%.
That is reason for concern.
Additionally, it is almost comical that last session, Evers used a veto to create a 400-year annual property tax increase and is now supposedly concerned about increasing taxes. Regardless of his past failures, the Republican legislature is going to continue working towards building a budget that’s fair, sustainable, and doesn’t negatively impact our businesses and our families.
Although I am disappointed to hear of Governor Evers’ unrealistic and unattainable budget proposal, I look forward to working with my colleagues to continue our responsible budgeting that has saved taxpayers billions while investing in the priorities and values of the 2nd Assembly District.
As a reminder, I will be hosting listening sessions in the district within the next few months to learn more about what your priorities are. I will be sure to share updates as they come through my e-updates and social media pages.
