2025-2027 State Budget Listening Session

Wisconsin State Reps. Shae Sortwell and Joy Goeben will hold a budget listening session.

Next Monday, February 10th, Rep. Goeben and I will be hosting a listening session at the Kaukauna Library from 5 to 6 p.m. This will be the first of many I will be hosting in the district over the next few months. More updates on the others will be provided once scheduled, so stay tuned!

I encourage you to come out, let your voice be heard, and let’s talk about the state budget!

Safety and Security Press Conference (2/4)

Republican legislators held a press conference at the Capitol to announce legislation that would require our state and local law enforcement to cooperate with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement),

Yesterday, Republican legislators held a press conference at the Capitol to announce legislation that would require our state and local law enforcement to cooperate with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) when they ask for an illegal immigrant to be locally detained pending pickup by their officers.

Currently, there is no statutory requirement for sheriffs’ departments to inquire with ICE when an individual’s legal status cannot be verified. When federal immigration authorities are made aware of an individual in a county jail who is illegally residing in the United States, a detainer may be issued requesting that the individual be held for no more than 48 hours awaiting federal immigration action. A detainer includes a request that the individual be detained for no more than 48 hours—it is not a requirement.

This legislation will require sheriffs to request proof of legal presence status from individuals held in a county jail for an offense punishable as a felony. The bill also requires sheriffs to comply with detainers and administrative warrants received from the federal Department of Homeland Security regarding individuals held in the county jail for a criminal offense.

To be abundantly clear, this is only for people who have been arrested for a felony.

It is important to note that President Trump won not only the presidency but also the Wisconsin vote in November. I think it only makes sense for us to cooperate with his attempt to fulfill the campaign promises he made to Wisconsin voters.

Lakeshore Technical College Legislative Breakfast (2/3)

This past Monday, some colleagues and I attended a legislative breakfast at Lakeshore Technical College. [See the featured photo above.] We discussed the challenges and opportunities facing higher education, workforce development, and our local community. Thank you, Lakeshore, for hosting us!

Accepting Hometown Hero Applications

Our office is looking for a Hometown Hero!

Throughout the year, before each session begins, a “Hometown Hero” will be recognized and honored at the beginning of the floor period.

The Hometown Heroes program seeks to identify and recognize individuals from around the state who give of themselves to make a difference in our communities and in the lives of those around them. These are people whose care and concern for others causes them to unconditionally intervene, mentor, or lend a hand wherever needed.

For example, a couple of years ago we had a young lady as our Hometown Hero who, at the age of 12, created a nonprofit organization that focused on bringing joy to cancer patients and their families. She was hardworking and dedicated to her organization, “Fighting Cancer with Grace,” and her academics, and was the perfect example of someone who was a hero to our community.

If you have someone you would like to nominate, please reach out. If interested, you can respond to this email with the person’s name and contact information and a short description as to why they should be recognized as a Hometown Hero. We look forward to hearing from you!
