State of the State Address (1/22)
Last week, I attended the Governor’s State of the State Address. While it was disappointing to hear Governor Evers take credit for tax cuts provided by the Republican legislature, it was not surprising. As a reminder, last session, when Republicans approved the largest tax cut in state history of over $4.4 billion, the governor responded by vetoing these tax cuts on any income above $27,630.
Evers not only vetoed the largest tax cut in state history, but also vetoed legislation that would have eliminated taxes on all retirement income.
Additionally, it was abundantly clear that the governor believes every solution for Wisconsin is attached to a large dollar sign. His plan for this session includes expanding the government bureaucracy through new unneeded programs to balloon existing welfare programs beyond our taxpayers’ ability to pay.
Lastly, there was concern expressed by Governor Evers regarding the newly elected administration in Washington D.C. It is important to remember that, not only did the United States as a whole vote for our new administration, but so did the people of Wisconsin. It is only right for Wisconsin’s elected officials to give our new federal leadership a fair chance before attempting to spread fear throughout our state.
Looking forward to this session, the Republican legislature will focus on tax cuts for retirees and struggling families. We will continue working towards holding higher standards for schools, reforming immigration, improving public safety, and returning the surplus into the hands of its rightful owners, the people of Wisconsin!
Accepting Hometown Hero Applications
Our office is looking for a Hometown Hero!
Throughout the year, before each session begins, a “Hometown Hero” will be recognized and honored at the beginning of the floor period.
The Hometown Heroes program seeks to identify and recognize individuals from around the state who give of themselves to make a difference in our communities and in the lives of those around them. These are people whose care and concern for others causes them to unconditionally intervene, mentor, or lend a hand wherever needed.
For example, a couple of years ago we had a young lady as our Hometown Hero who, at the age of 12, created a nonprofit organization that focused on bringing joy to cancer patients and their families. She was hardworking and dedicated to her organization, “Fighting Cancer with Grace,” and her academics, and was the perfect example of someone who was a hero to our community.
If you have someone you would like to nominate, please reach out. If interested, you can respond to this email with the person’s name and contact information and a short description as to why they should be recognized as a Hometown Hero. We look forward to hearing from you!
