Senate Committee on Government Operations, Labor and Economic Development Public Hearing
Today, May 21st, I testified on one of my bills in the Senate. For some context, a decade ago, the legislature passed 2015 WI Act 55, which transferred the Worker’s Compensation Division’s (WCD) administrative law judges (ALJ) to the DOA’s Division of Hearings and Appeals (DHA) within the newly created Office of Worker’s Compensation Hearings (OWCH). The goal of this legislation was to create efficiencies in the litigation processes and reduce their administrative costs. Unfortunately, in this time, efficiencies have not been seen.
SB 229 would transfer these adjudicatory functions of DHA back to DWD, which currently has the technology and system to create the efficiencies needed for workers’ compensation claims.
De Pere Legislator Day (5/19)
Monday, May 19th, was Legislator Day with the De Pere School District. During my time there, I visited classrooms at the De Pere Middle School, talked with students and staff, and discussed issues presented to me that I am now working on in regard to school nurses.
ESOP Passes Out of Committee
A few e-updates ago, I touched on one of my bills, AB 17, which creates tax incentives (tax credit and capital gain deduction) for Wisconsin businesses that convert to an employee stock ownership business structure (ESOP). I am happy to share that it passed out of committee last week with bipartisan support. The next steps are to see it on the Assembly floor and in the Senate!
