Budget Highlight: Workforce Development
This week I want to highlight an important aspect of the 2023-25 Legislative Budget proposal: workforce development. I’m sure many of you have felt or are feeling the effects of a shrinking workforce and high inflation. These conditions make it very difficult to hire and retain workers, and Wisconsinites all over the state are experiencing the negative consequences of not having enough workers to fill jobs.
The Legislature’s budget invested in programs that are proven to help get people into high-demand jobs and fields. These include youth apprenticeship programs and technical education grants, which are aimed at developing the skills of young workers and putting them on a path to early career success. Among these investments are an increase in technical school funding by nearly $10 million, $7 million more for the youth apprenticeship program, and increased funding for the WisCaregivers program to help get more people into much-needed positions in the medical field.
Investing in our workforce means funding programs that have a track record of producing positive results. That’s why the Legislature focused on developing career and technical skills for individuals of all ages in the state budget.
