2023-25 Budget Highlight: Education
As parents and students gear up for the upcoming school year, I’d like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the investments in education made in the 2023-25 state budget.
Our budget invested over $1 billion in new funding for K-12 schools in Wisconsin. Some of this is targeted towards key areas that are currently underfunded and where students are experiencing the most difficulty: $50 million for literacy initiatives to address Wisconsin’s sliding literacy rates, and $30 million for mental health programming to address the growing mental health crisis in our kids.
In addition to funding these key areas, our budget also provides support to parents and gives them the freedom to choose the schooling option that is right for their child. Each family is unique, but one thing we can all agree on is that every child deserves access to quality education that fits their needs. Our budget recognizes these differences and empowers families to choose the type of education that responds to their own unique circumstances.
Additional changes and investments to Wisconsin’s K-12 schools include:
- $325 per-pupil funding increase in each year of the biennium
- Raises the per-pupil revenue ceiling by $1,000, bringing it to $11,000 per student
- $4.6 million for high-cost special education aid, which brings state reimbursement to 1/3 of the cost
- $7 million in each budget year for school library aids
- Maintains state funding of public schools at two-thirds
All of these investments, among others, were thoughtfully included in the budget to support children, parents, and educators, ensuring that our state’s future is in good hands.
Celebrating Green Bay as Host of the 2025 NFL Draft!
Earlier this week I attended an event at Lambeau Field to celebrate Green Bay as the host of the 2025 NFL Draft! In what will essentially be a weeklong promotion of the Green Bay community and the state of Wisconsin, the draft is estimated to attract 240,000 visitors to the area and 54 million viewers online. Overall, the state is projected to experience an economic boost of $94 million, $20 million of which will be in Green Bay.
It’s been a pleasure to play a role in bringing this event to Green Bay. I look forward to showcasing to the country and world all that our community has to offer!
