SESSION HIGHLIGHT: Legislation Signed to Empower Survivors of Sexual Assault
For the next few weeks, I will be taking the opportunity to highlight major accomplishments from this legislative session. First up: legislation to empower victims of sexual assault signed into law.
This bill was a follow-up to legislation signed last session that created timelines for each step along the way for processing a sexual assault kit. The timelines applied to law enforcement and hospitals, but didn’t cover the final step — analysis and processing by the State Crime Lab. This bill will fill that gap by requiring the State Crime Lab to begin processing a kit within 5 days of receiving it, and complete the process within the next 60 days. After years of having a significant backlog in the state’s processing of sexual assault kits, this legislation will ensure that all kits are processed in a timely manner each step along the way.
Tune in later this week for the next session highlight!
