Absentee Ballot Tracking Bill Receives Public Hearing
This week, the bill I authored with Senator Cabral-Guevara to allow absentee voters to receive text message updates on the status of their ballot received a public hearing in the Senate Committee on Campaigns and Elections. This bill is supported by colleagues and organizations on both sides of the aisle, and allows voters the option to enroll in text alerts. Participating voters would receive a text notifying them when their absentee application has been received by the clerk and when their actual absentee ballot has been received by the clerk. As more and more people vote absentee in Wisconsin, it’s important that their ballot has reached its proper destination. This is one simple, cost-effective way to ensure that our elections are more transparent and secure going forward.
“Returning Your Surplus” Bill Moves Ahead in the Senate
I’m thrilled to say the bill I authored to provide a $2.9 billion income tax reduction for Wisconsin taxpayers received a public hearing in the Senate Committee on Universities and Revenue! Not only would Wisconsin’s middle class see major income tax relief under this proposal, but retirees would also experience a tax-free retirement by choosing to stay in the state. Earlier this month the bill was passed by the full Assembly. The bill will now be sent available for voting action by the Senate, before being sent to the Governor’s desk. See my press release above for more details.
First Meeting of the Task Force on Human Trafficking
Earlier this week, the Speaker’s Task Force on Human Trafficking met for our first public hearing. The purpose of this task force is to study human trafficking activities in Wisconsin, review existing laws on the issue, and provide recommendations on how we can work to eliminate this illegal and despicable industry. This is a heavy topic to study, but I look forward to hearing from the experts and working with my colleagues on both sides to see how we can better equip state agencies, law enforcement, and organizations in Wisconsin to combat the terrible reality that is happening in our communities.
