56th Assembly District E-Update: March 3, 2023

Proposed Grade 5-12 Police Curriculum

Providing the public with a stronger understanding of their rights and responsibilities while interacting with law enforcement would create a solid foundation of mutual cooperation and respect. The best place to create this foundation is in our schools.

I am introducing a bill that requires the state superintendent of public instruction, in consultation with organizations representing law enforcement, to develop a model curriculum for students in grades 5 to 12 to instruct pupils on how to interact with law enforcement with mutual cooperation and respect.

The bill requires a school board or operator of an independent charter school to include in at least two grades from 5 to 8 and at least two grades from 9 to 12 instruction in law enforcement interactions that is consistent with the model curriculum, unless the school board or governing board of the independent charter school opts out of including such instruction. The bill specifies that a school board that elects not to include such instruction must publicly adopt a resolution making that election.

“Schoolahoop” Helps Parents Choose the Best School

The open enrollment application period for the 2023-24 school year has started. Now Wisconsin families have a new tool called Schoolahoop that will help make them aware of educational opportunities available to them. Schoolahoop is a free service that helps parents find and compare schools that best fit their child’s individual needs.

Research shows that four out of five families do not know what options exist and therefore do not ask about them. Schoolahoop explains to parents the various options available, including open enrollment in other public districts, private schools, and charter schools.

Many parents are unfamiliar with the differences and don’t know these options are available to their children, or they may not know how affordable the different options can be. A feature called Scholarship Discover helps parents determine if they qualify for the parental choice program and what other scholarship assistance might be available.

Now, more parents than ever are taking action to select where their children receive a quality education and the best learning environment possible.

Open Enrollment FAQs

What is Open Enrollment?

The open enrollment program allows parents to enroll their child in to a different school district without moving.

Parents may not submit applications to more than 3 nonresident school districts in one school year. Virtual charter schools are not included in the 3 nonresident school districts.

Who can apply?

Any Wisconsin resident in 4K to grade 12 may apply to attend a nonresident school district under the open enrollment program.

However, a child may transfer to a nonresident school district for early childhood education or 4K only if the child’s resident school district offers the same type of program and only if the child is eligible for that program in the resident school district.

When can parents apply?

The regular open enrollment application period for the 2023-24 school year began on Monday, February 6, 2023, and ends at 4:00 pm on Friday, April 28, 2023. The best way to apply is dpi.wi.gov/open-enrollment

Applications cannot be acted on by school boards before May 1. If an application is denied, a parent cannot submit another application to the same school district for that student that year; however, the parent may file an appeal with DPI within 30 days.
