Assembly – February 20th & 22nd
The Speaker’s Truancy Taskforce
The Speaker’s Task Force on Truancy bill package passed the Assembly on February 20th. The Task Force conducted numerous public hearings across the state to gather insights and perspectives from various stakeholders. The culmination of these efforts has resulted in a comprehensive report outlining key findings and recommendations to address the challenges associated with truancy.
The work of the task force underscores the importance of addressing truancy as a barrier to student success. By engaging stakeholders and examining current practices, we have developed actionable recommendations to improve attendance accountability and ensure every child has access to quality education.
The bill package includes an overall definition of truancy, adds a reporting requirement to the DPI report card on truancy, provides additional language in parent letters addressing their right of request for intervention methods when a child is truant, a retention policy that can be used as a last case resort when a student misses up to a cumulative 30 days of school without statute protected excuses, and a grant program in which to provide truancy officer assists to qualifying districts.

At the Capitol
Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College Student Leaders group stopped by the capitol to discuss areas that are important for student success.
This week, I had the opportunity to speak with TeenPact Leadership Schools. These are amazing students learning to understand the political process and value their liberty. TeenPact Students learn how to embrace their call as the next generation of leaders, find encouragement among like-minded peers, and develop the skills to engage the culture. www.teenpact.com
The Alzheimer’s Association visited Rep. Goeben’s office and met with Chris (right), Rep. Goeben’s fantastic staffer who also wrote this.
Students from Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay came to the capitol to support AB 1034. (See featured photo above.)
School District facilities and student athletes are utilized by the WIAA. But the WIAA proposes, makes, and enforces rules without requiring public insight into their decisions.
AB 1034 prohibits public school districts from being members of the interscholastic athletic association unless the association subjects itself to public meeting laws and open meeting laws to promote transparency. Records concerning referees and pupil athletes are exempt, and not subject to public records requests.
Happy to have a conversation with representatives from East Wisconsin Savings Bank in Kaukauna. Thankful for the time they took to share about how legislation that has passed through the assembly will help to prevent elder fraud.
