5th Assembly District Update: July 14, 2023

Operation Love Our Troops meme.Sorry that we missed last weeks e-update. I took a trip to see my son before he headed out on his deployment to Poland. Having a child serving our nation makes the Operation We Love Our Troops event even more meaningful.

Do you know someone from our community who is in the U.S. military and is either deployed or stationed overseas? If you do would you please contact my office. This summer, the Legislature is again organizing an appreciation event for our active duty military members. If you would like to have a care package sent their way as part of Operation We Love Our Troops you can reach me at: Rep.Goeben@legis.wi.gov or (608) 237-9105.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers' vote priorities.

Legislation

I had been so excited that we had passed a budget for all of Wisconsin. But last week, Governor Tony Evers chose to ignore the Legislature’s approved tax cuts for 95% of Wisconsinites.

Gov. Evers removed the Legislature’s introductory measure on tax reform for Wisconsin by eradicating reduced tax rates for 75% of the middle class and most of the state’s businesses. Wisconsinites were on track to receive the largest tax cut in state history.

What happened? The State collected too much in tax and was poised to return the money to the people of Wisconsin.

Using a partial veto, Governor Evers placed progressive ideals over fiscal prudency and common decency. He manipulated the language inside the tax plan by purposefully crossing-out single words, numbers and a hyphen to increase per-pupil funding by $325 every year, for 402 years. This irresponsible move will raise property taxes on all Wisconsinites.

Excerpts from State Statute Sections 402 and 403 now reads” For the limit for 2023-2425, add $325 to the result … ” [and]  “… a school district cannot increase its revenues for the 2020-21 school year – year 2425 to an amount that exceeds the amount calculated as follows: …”

Governor Evers also chose to veto areas that would benefit our natural resources. One veto eliminated the increase of tribal gaming revenue to the conservation fund for supporting conservation. He also vetoed funding to fish hatcheries, dams, and state parks.
