19th Senate District Update: June 16, 2023

Historic Shared Revenue Agreement

From the legislature voting on a historic shared revenue bill, school funding, to the Joint Finance Committee’s continued work on Wisconsin’s budget, it’s been a busy week!

On Wednesday, the Senate convened for a floor vote where we voted on the Shared Revenue bill. This historic measure reworks the current funding formula. Negotiations between the legislature, the Governor, and community members, resulted in getting closer to closing the funding gap between rural communities and larger municipalities. This measure boosts nearly all municipal shared revenues by 20%.

Additionally this measure will:

  • Repeal the Personal Property Tax
  • Prohibit the defunding of police by local municipalities
  • Provide historic investments in public safety and generational support for our local communities
  • Incentivize innovation and consolidation within our local governments

Historic Funding in Education

Senate Bill 330 was also voted on by the Senate and Assembly this week. This measure provides over $1 billion in new spendable resources for public schools, and provides parity in funding for all students regardless of what school they attend. Wisconsin was the first state in the nation to implement a school choice program, I am happy with the work that has been done to protect the values of local communities, while providing a competitive option for parents to educate their children in a manner that works best for them.

This huge bipartisan bill has gone through months of extensive negotiation between the State Senate, the State Assembly, the Governor, and community members all across our great state.

Funding for public schools will increase by $325 per-pupil in each of the next two fiscal years, and provides investments in mental health and special education.
