5th Assembly District Update: June 23, 2023

In the capitol this week we had a visit from Miss America. Grace Stanke is a Wisconsin native who attends University of Wisconsin Madison studying nuclear engineering. She spoke about the benefits of nuclear power and nuclear medicine. She will continue using her Miss America platform to raise awareness about nuclear power and zero-carbon energy sources.

Legislation

On June 21, the Assembly was once again in session. All of the following bills passed the Assembly.

  • AB-45 protects consumer choice by prohibiting local governments and state agencies from placing restrictions utility services based upon the type of fuel used to provide energy.
  • AB-74 increases the amount of time that a seasonal commercial drivers license is valid from 180 days to 210 days. This mirrors federal law and is designed to assist our agriculture industry.
  • AB-161 provides the necessary permissions for DHS to distribute federal matching dollars to private EMS providers.
  • AB-176 permits pharmacists an unprecedented ability to prescribe hormonal contraceptive patches and self-administered oral hormonal contraceptives, including birth control pills, under specific circumstances, unlike any other drug which requires a prescription from a licensed health-care provider.
  • AB-244 allows respiratory therapists to accompany pediatric patients who are being transferred between hospitals in helicopters.
  • AB-233 allows current school board members the opportunity to be a volunteer school bus driver within the same district with the appropriate qualifications and agreements.
  • AB-302 provides a sales and use tax exemption for supplies and services used by large scale data centers.
AB-304 improves alcohol beverage regulation for brewers, brewpubs, wineries, and distillers/rectifiers to provide consistency throughout the state.
  • AB-320 removes artificial water bodies related to nonmetallic mining operations from the DNR reclamation permitting requirements. This streamlines the current permitting process while leaving environmental protections in place.
  • AB-321 changes the requirements for reading instruction in all Wisconsin schools, including private schools, charter schools, and voucher choice schools.
