56th Assembly District Update: May 15, 2026

Returning the Surplus

On Tuesday, I joined my colleagues from the Fox Valley at a press conference in Green Bay to unveil a new bipartisan agreement between Legislature leadership and Governor Evers.

Wisconsin is currently sitting on a $2.5 billion surplus. Over the past two months, legislative leadership and the Governor worked together to reach a responsible plan to return $1.8 billion of that surplus directly to the people of Wisconsin.

The agreement would deliver meaningful tax relief, including:

  • $850 million for income tax rebate checks — with married joint filers receiving $600 and individual filers getting $300
  • $600 million in special education reimbursements and general school aid to help lower property taxes
  • The complete elimination of the state income tax on cash tips and overtime income

The package passed the Assembly on a bipartisan basis (61-32). However, it ultimately failed in the State Senate. In divided government, compromise is essential. No bill is ever perfect, but this agreement delivered real results for Wisconsin taxpayers and families. Unfortunately, with an election approaching, too many were unwilling to accept that reality. You can read the bill here.

Law Enforcement Memorial

Last Friday the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony took place at the Capitol. This annual event is a somber reminder of the sacrifices so many have been willing to give for our state and local communities.

Last Friday the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony took place at the Capitol. This annual event is a somber reminder of the sacrifices so many have been willing to give for our state and local communities. The weather was beautiful, and representatives from all over the state, including our district made the trip down to honor fallen officers. There is a permanent memorial on Capitol grounds that you can learn more about here.
