Federalism, Separating the States and Feds

You may have figured out that I like to both read and comment on opinion pieces in the Epoch Times. Here’s another one. Fractious and Fractured Federalism | The Epoch Times The piece points out that the ONE BASIC CAUSE OF WASTED TAX DOLLARS (FRAUD) within our government is the relationship between Federal and State spending. Let me give you an analogy.

You are the executor of a large trust fund. (The Feds) You are in charge of dispersing allowances to several (50) spoiled, irresponsible and somewhat worthless children. (The States) The kids aren’t stupid. They constantly figure out ways to work the system and justify the increasing of their allowances in order to fund their immoral habits and friends. And while you see the cheating and you see the pending doom of the trust fund, you can’t (or won’t) do anything about it because YOU are the one who set it up that way! Yet, something has to be done, or it will all crash down on your heads.

Our Federal Government has gotten away from ONLY fulfilling its duties stated in The Constitution and has stuck its nose into (funded) tons of stuff that should be handled by the individual States. The result is a 30-SOME TRILLION DOLLAR DEBT. Do you see a problem here?

The ET article suggests that the solution to this crisis is to revert to the original meaning of “Federalism” or separation of powers (and responsibilities) as defined in The Constitution. In other words, every power and responsibility that was NOT specifically granted to the Feds WILL BE the responsibility of the States. And it would be the responsibility of the STATES to fund it all.

What if the trust-fund manager said, “Sorry kids. But your allowance is going to be cut by 90%. I’m not going to fund your bodacious expenses anymore. You are now responsible to live your own lives and for the most part, fund them.” Talk about a reality check. None of the kids would shrivel up and die. They would all adapt to one extent of another. But one thing is for sure. They would all cut out unnecessary expenses (fraud). “Necessity IS the mother of invention.”

Once again, our 18th Century Founders have proven themselves to be a whole lot smarter than the generations of politicians that followed them. (Except for that term limits thing.) But unfortunately, it is today’s politicians who have to drum up enough intelligence to fix this whole fraud and spending mess. Sigh.
