Congressman Tony Wied’s Update: February 7, 2025

Protecting Sturgeon from FWS

I am excited to announce that I am introducing my first piece of legislation today. The bill is titled the Sturgeon Protects and Exempt from Absurd Regulations (SPEAR) Act.

This bill would prohibit U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from listing Wisconsin lake sturgeon as endangered or threatened and derail any future attempts to do so.

In 2018 the Center for Biological Diversity sued USFWS for a “threatened” listing for lake sturgeon under the Endangered Species Act. An ESA listing as threatened or endangered would have ended the long-standing practice of sturgeon spearing.

Thankfully after conducting a thorough species status assessment using the best available science, the USFWS determined in April of 2024 Lake sturgeon do not require listing under the Endangered Species Act. Although this was the outcome we were hoping for, there is nothing stopping environmental groups from continuing to pursue this matter.

Wisconsin is one of the few places in the U.S. where sturgeon populations are healthy enough for spearing seasons and I want to ensure that we allow this local tradition to continue for generations to come.

Subcommittee on Aviation

I am proud to announce that I have been selected to serve as Vice Chair of the House Subcommittee on Aviation.

It has become painfully clear that our aviation systems need to be re-examined and improved with safety remaining our top priority. I look forward to working to ensure that our airspace remains the safest in the world.

Co-Sponsoring the Remain in Mexico Act

I am proud to be a cosponsor on the REMAIN in Mexico Act (H.R.273). This bill will codify the effective immigration policy of the Trump administration. This will be done with the aim of deterring illegal border crossings by ensuring those who wish to enter the United States wait in Mexico for their legal proceedings, reducing the incentive for false asylum claims.

By having migrants remain in Mexico, we reduce the immediate pressure on our border towns, law enforcement, and social services, allowing us to better manage who enters our country. This bill is a necessity for our national security and our sovereignty. This bill will bring order back to our immigration system which has been left in shambles by the previous Administration.

We need to stand firm, refuse to back down, and make it clear that America’s borders belong to the United States and not to those who would abuse our asylum system for their own gain. It’s time to act, and with the REMAIN in Mexico Act, we’re taking back control.

Standing Up for the Rule of Law

Yesterday, I joined fellow freshman members of the Republican Conference to address the issue of illegal immigration and let the American people know that the House GOP is working alongside President Trump to secure our border and make the safety of American citizens our number one priority.

Since President Trump took office, we have seen a 63% drop in illegal encounters at the border on average.

That is what happens when you have a president who prioritizes the safety of American citizens.

President Trump has reinstated the “Remain in Mexico” policy, that I am proud to co-sponsor a bill by Rep. Brandon Gill to make this policy permanent so that future radical administrations cannot undo our progress.

We also passed the Laken Riley Act and the Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act. These bills ensure that anyone in this country illegally who commits a crime—whether it be theft or sexual assault—will have an ICE detainer placed on them immediately.

The House of Representatives just passed the HALT Act, permanently criminalizing fentanyl.

This is just the beginning. We will not rest until our border is secure again, and Americans feel safe in their communities again.
