Congressman Tony Wied’s Update: May 16, 2025

This week, several committees voted to advance the House GOP’s budget reconciliation bill. This bill will provide the tools we need to enact President Trump’s agenda, cut reckless federal spending, support our farmers, secure our border, and put our country back on a sound fiscal path.

I was proud to participate in the House Agriculture Committee’s budget reconciliation markup this week. In our portion of the bill, we ensure that we protect our farmers, put the “farm” back in the Farm Bill, and ensure the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) remains viable for those truly in need by rooting out waste and abuse.

Currently, 82% of the Farm Bill funds entitlement programs like SNAP. It’s a bit misleading to call it a “farm bill” when such a small portion is dedicated to supporting farmers and agriculture. By strengthening work requirements for able-bodied adults, we can help lift people out of poverty while preserving the program for those who truly in need and redirecting those misused funds to agriculture programs.

Our budget bill will ensure we refocus and rebalance our funding to give farmers the tools they need to thrive. While the House budget reconciliation bill is not a substitute for the Farm Bill, I will support any legislation that helps Northeast Wisconsin and our farmers and agricultural industry.

The final bill will hopefully be brought to a vote in the next week, and it’s time we come together to pass it, enact the agenda the American people voted for, and continue Making America Great Again!

A Badge of Honor: We Back the Blue
During National Police Week, it is important that we recognize the courage of our law enforcement heroes who risk their lives to protect our communities every day. Thank you to all the police and law enforcement officers in Northeast Wisconsin for your dedicated service! National Police Week was first established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962 when he signed a proclamation designating May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week that it falls in as Police Week. Each year in mid-May, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the country head to Washington, D.C. to participate in several planned events – from running in a 5K to attending a memorial service or the candlelight vigil. Sadly, over the past few years, we’ve seen a rise in anti-police rhetoric and assaults on law enforcement officers due to the far Left’s Defund the Police movement. That’s why this week, House Republicans brought a series of “Back the Blue” bills to the floor that demonstrated our continued support for our brave law enforcement officers. Now more than ever, law enforcement officers need our support. Let us pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and remember their courage, dedication, and commitment to keeping our communities safe.

Crash for Cash: Cracking Down on Staged Accidents
Last week, I joined several of my colleagues in sending a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, to highlight an alarming rise of staged vehicle accidents. There are a wide variety of these schemes happening across the country. Typically, the schemes involve sophisticated fraudsters (with ties to organized crime) purposefully causing or faking accidents, often at construction sites or with unsuspecting commercial trucks, to collect insurance payouts. In in New York, an investigative spotlight resulted in one scumbag law firm walking away from over 200 unfounded personal injury cases. These organized, fraudulent schemes pose serious risks to public safety, increase consumer costs, and raise insurance premiums for the rest of the motoring public. Enhanced public awareness campaigns, increased enforcement, and stricter penalties for offenders are necessary to deter criminals from running these scams. In our letter, I urged the Attorney General to create a specialized task force dedicated to investigating and prosecuting incidents of staged accident fraud. By taking decisive action now, we can protect innocent drivers, uphold the integrity of our insurance system, and send a clear message that this kind of fraud will not be tolerated. District Update

Green Bay SWAT Team and National Police Week
Thank you to the members of the Green Bay Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team and Green Bay Police Chief Chris Davis for allowing me to recently observe a portion of your hostage crisis training exercise. I was impressed at the high level of coordination and professionalism the team executed throughout the drill. I am proud to have such highly trained men and women in our backyard ready to respond to high-risk incidents in the area.

Waupaca County Sheriff Wilz Recognized for 30 Years of Service
This week, Waupaca County Sheriff Timothy Wilz celebrated 30 years of service in law enforcement. Sheriff Wilz’s three decades of service to Waupaca are reflective of his unwavering commitment to the people of Waupaca and Northeast Wisconsin. Throughout his impressive career, Sheriff Wilz has held several positions that have played critical roles in ensuring the safety of residents in our communities. Thank you, Sheriff Wilz, for your service that has undoubtedly contributed to the lasting success of the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office. Congratulations on this impressive milestone!

Visiting UW-Green Bay
I recently visited the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay (UWGB) to learn more about the important research and educational initiatives taking place on campus. Chancellor Alexander and members of their team hosted a great conversation about the Green Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve that would support environmental science, conservation, and community engagement in our region. I also had the opportunity to tour several campus facilities and speak with faculty and staff about their work. I’m very impressed by their dedication to fostering the next generation of leaders and innovators.

Meeting Green Bay Metro Fire Chief Knott and Welcoming Spring Recruits
Recently, I sat down with Green Bay Metro Fire Chief Matthew Knott at City Hall to talk about the department’s continued efforts to keep our community safe. One of the highlights was the department’s new joint mobile command post that will now be shared between Green Bay Metro Fire and the Green Bay Police Department. This mobile command center was built right here in Wisconsin and all while saving taxpayer dollars, this investment will help both agencies coordinate during emergencies and large-scale events. I’m grateful for the leadership of Chief Knott and the dedication of all our first responders.

This week, a member of my staff also had the opportunity to attend the Green Bay Metro Fire Department Spring Recruit Class Ceremony held at the Brown County Public Library. The recruits completed a rigorous training program that taught them the necessary skills to wear the uniform and tested them both mentally and physically. I want to thank the brave men and women who are choosing to lead a life of service and for protecting all of us here in Northeast Wisconsin. Congratulations!
