The next meeting of Fox Valley Initiative will take place on Monday, April 7, with expert law enforcement speakers who will be discussing the fentanyl crisis in the Fox Valley.
Fentanyl is more potent than other opioids and is being found in all types of drugs, including cocaine and methamphetamine. It is VERY difficult to detect: It can’t be seen, tasted, or smelled. A tiny amount — as little as two grains of salt — is enough to kill someone.
This meeting will reveal how prevalent fentanyl is in the Fox Valley and what actions are being taken to address the problem.
On March 24, a 29-year-old Little Chute mother was sentenced to nine years in prison for the fentanyl overdose death of her two-year-old daughter. From the Wisconsin Department of Health Services:
“Wisconsin’s opioid epidemic began more than 20 years ago. It started with the overprescribing of prescription pain relievers. When these drugs became harder to get for nonmedical use, heroin use increased. Heroin was more available and cheaper. Today, illegally manufactured fentanyl and other opioids are being mixed with other drugs. This mixing is the reason why opioid overdose deaths remain high in Wisconsin.”
This scourge has left a wake of death and life-altering damage across the state of Wisconsin.
On April 7, Fox Valley Initiative will host the leader of the Lake Winnebago Area Metropolitan Enforcement Group – Drug Unit (LWAM) and two of his Outagamie County Sherriff’s assistants to give the public an overview of the opioid issue facing the county and northeast Wisconsin.
Please join us to get a better understanding of this not so silent threat to our community and what we can do to assist in the MEG unit’s efforts. This meeting is free and open to the public. Advance registration is requested. Please register here so we know how many chairs we’ll need.
The meeting will take place at FreedomProject Academy, 750 North Hickory Farm Lane, Appleton. MAP
