Wisconsin State Superintendent Jill Underly announced in September that she is running for re-election in 2025.
Elected in 2021 to her first term in the office, it appears Udderly will face a primary challenge and won’t be receiving the support of some usual liberal backers. Jeff Wright, current superintendent of the Sauk Prairie School District, announced he’s running for the office with the support of the Wisconsin Education Assocation Council (WEAC), the state’s largest teacher’s union.
Both are running for the state superintendent position as Democrats; no Republican has announced candidacy for the job.
The MacIver Institute reported:
Republican lawmakers have criticized Underly for focusing too much on LGBTQ issues, and not focusing enough on reading and math.
She has presided over a public school system that has seen reading and math scores slip, and she was silent about Milwaukee Public Schools’ financial crisis that could end-up costing MPS $50 million.
On Monday, a new report questioned the motives and impact of Underly’s push to change the scores for Wisconsin’s standardized tests.
