“Our Constitution was Made Only for a Religious and Moral People”

On this, the holiest of days for Christians across the world, it is timely to recall that the moral and ethical ideals that formed the foundation of our great country were rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition. References to the Creator are embedded throughout the founding documents; the most well-known being the sentence in the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. The founders struck a masterful balance between guaranteeing individual religious freedom and ensuring that the government did not impose any particular religion.

John Adams famously said, “Our Constitution was made only for a religious and moral people”. Over the past 50 years, we have been in a steady state of societal decline; increasingly drawn to secularism and away from God. All we have to do is look around us to realize how many are lost and drifting with no moral compass to guide them. People who don’t know what they believe cannot teach our nation’s children how to live and the downward spiral is perpetuated through generations. Depression, anxiety and despair are destroying lives that should be filled with joy and promise.

I am far from the ideal person to carry this message. A journey of faith is very personal, and I am often confounded by the mystery of God. I do know this with certainty. The Commandments of God are the foundation for a righteous life. As we press on in the fierce battle to take our country back, reaffirming our Judeo-Christian heritage will be an important step on the road to victory. A wise man once shared these thoughts with me and they stayed with me. “I believe that the Ten Commandments are a gift from God, constant, and life’s fundamentals. We were not made to serve them; they were made to serve us. Jesus taught us how to use them”.
