19th Senate District Update: March 15, 2024

This week, the Senate held its final floor session of the year. Many important bills were voted on and sent to the governor’s desk in the hope of being signed into law. This includes two bills I authored:

Assembly Bill 385 will add Hmong veterans admitted to the United States under the Hmong Veterans’ Naturalization Act to the definition of “veteran” for the purposes of the status on state ID cards. Recognizing these veterans who served alongside our armed forces against communism is an important step in the right direction.

Assembly Bill 793 would expand and improve 529 education savings accounts. These accounts are a critical tool for families to save for their kids’ college. Not only are contributions to these accounts deductible, withdrawals are also tax-free, so long as it is used for an eligible purpose. These changes will not only let families save more, but also allow them to use these accounts for broader education expenses, including apprenticeship expenses and loan repayments. This bill will also incentivize employers to contribute more to 529 accounts, upping the credit to 50% from 25% of maximum contributions.

I also am proud of the bill I authored that was signed into law this week. Senate Bill 381, now known as 2023 Act 118, which will allow for more flexibility in the adoption process for prospective parents.

My staff and I were also happy to meet with:

  • Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC)
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley
  • American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
  • The Yahara House
  • March of Dimes WI
  • Neenah Mayor Lang
  • Waushara County Sheriff Zuehlke
  • Waushara County Board members
  • Wautoma Mayor Nixon

Next week, I look forward to many more meetings in our area!
