19th Senate District Update: September 15, 2023

Veto Override and More

This week was a busy week in the legislature, I’m excited to provide you an update of the work we’ve been doing.

This week, the Senate Health Committee I chair held public hearings and votes on a number of bipartisan measures.

  • The committee heard testimony on a bill that would allow people to donate their remains to search and rescue organizations, which helps train dogs who help find lost or trapped people.
  • We also heard a bill I authored that would allow certain hearing aids to be fitted and sold over the counter.
  • Six of the governor’s appointees to a variety of health related boards were recommended for confirmation in unanimous votes from all our Republican and Democratic members.
  • A bill allowing pharmacists to prescribe birth control was recommended for passage into law by a five to one vote, with strong bipartisan support.

The Wisconsin State Senate convened for a floor session where we voted to:

  1. Recognize September 2023 as Family Meals Month. This resolution is to encourage families to eat dinner together a few times a month.
  2. Increase certain farmland tax credits
  3. Voted to override the Governor’s veto of the middle class tax cut provision. In the Governor’s initial veto, he allowed for local municipalities to increase school funding for the next 400 years. This would increase property taxes at a rate of $375 per pupil creating a financial burden on our property owners who are already struggling to make ends meet.

In addition, my office has had productive meetings with:

  • WIANA
  • Wisconsin Salt Wise
  • Pediatric Cancer stakeholders
  • Treillage (Grand Opening)
  • Eagle Scout (Citation Ceremony)
