Time to Close GBCI

This week I had the opportunity to participate in a roundtable discussion with the Village of Allouez on the topic of closing the Green Bay Correctional Institution. Other panel members included village and county officials, community advocates and experts, an ex-inmate, and a family member of someone currently incarcerated at GBCI. Despite coming from unique backgrounds and perspectives, we all agreed on one thing: closing GBCI is what’s best for Wisconsin.

Green Bay Correctional Institution is overcrowded and dangerous. The facility is roughly 25% over-capacity and only 5% of its buildings are up to par. On top of that, GBCI is nearly 40% understaffed. These conditions have created a precarious situation inside the prison walls. I believe it is our responsibility as a state to do something before this situation reaches a critical tipping point. I have been a leading advocate at the state level for closing down GBCI for eight years, and I will continue to urge the Governor to act before it’s too late.

Local Visits

Wisconsin State Rep. David Steffen visited Milk & Honey Cafe in Oconto Falls. Wisconsin State Rep. David Steffen visited Milk & Honey Cafe in Oconto Falls.

While in Oconto Falls this weekend, I came across a wonderful little restaurant — Milk & Honey Cafe. Michelle wears all the hats here: owner, greeter, chef, and baker. By the way, she makes Wisconsin’s BEST scones! Milk & Honey Cafe is a family-run place and Michelle’s daughter, Lilly, was hard at work too. Michelle shared with me that the logo includes three bees, representing her three children. As I’m still getting to know the people and places in southern Oconto County, please share with me places I need to check out!
