Session Highlight: Kids Online Safety Act
One of the most impactful highlights from this session for me was the introduction of the Kids Online Safety Act, which I authored to help protect kids as they navigate social media. Research has shown the dangers of social media for kids — from increased anxiety to child sex trafficking to a host of self image disorders. All the while, social media companies are aware of these issues and choosing to continue their harmful practices.
This proposal would limit advertising and direct messaging aimed at children, as well as set curfews for social media access for minors. I want to be clear: this is not the government telling you how to parent your child. It’s simply an extra set of optional tools parents can use to help keep their kids safe online. I’ve heard from folks inside the Capitol and out that these changes would make the internet a safer place for kids. I’m hopeful that this idea will garner even more support in the future!
