Assembly Republicans Announce a Historic, Major Reform to Shared Revenue Funding for Counties, Towns, and Villages
Today, Assembly and Senate Republicans announced significant increases in shared revenue funding for local governments, making up for 20 years of underfunding. Included in the announcement are the following key items:
- Devoting 20% of state sales tax revenue – one cent for every 5 cents collected. This will be approximately $1.5 billion.
- $300 million for an “Innovation Fund” to encourage communities to work together on public safety. This state program will incentivize local governments to provide services more efficiently.
- Funding for existing grants to local governments to upgrade 911 systems will be tripled.
- The Funding Assistance Program for EMS will be increased by $12.8 million, bringing the amount to $15 million.
- Funding for Law Enforcement training will double, increasing to $320 million.
Although this increase in shared revenue does not solve all of the needs of Wisconsin’s local governments, it is a significant step. We can only hope Governor Evers will agree.
Assembly Republicans Propose Ways to Strengthen Milwaukee and Address Its Underfunded Pension
The proposal allows Milwaukee (city and county) to hold a referendum to increase their sales tax. This will allow the city and county to address the ongoing unfunded pension liability, invest in their court system and put more law enforcement officers on the street. This ensures sustainable additions to law enforcement, including putting resource officers in schools with the greatest challenges.
2 Listening Sessions Scheduled
Listening sessions in my district are a great opportunity to have your voice heard. The purpose of these listening sessions is to find out what your concerns and priorities are as Wisconsin gets set to enact a new budget. Unlike the federal government, Wisconsin must have a balanced budget. Due to responsible budgeting by Republicans in the past, Wisconsin is in a strong economic position. We must continue to make careful decisions as we move forward in these uncertain times.
