$3 Billion Income Tax-Cut Passes Assembly
I am pleased to say that the proposal I authored to cut state income taxes by nearly $3 billion passed the Assembly floor this week. Two-thirds of this tax-cut will come from a reduction of the middle-class tax rate from 5.3% to 4.4%, and the other third will come from eliminating state income taxes on a majority of retirement account income for Wisconsin retirees. Both components of this legislation are aimed at alleviating Wisconsin’s onerous tax burden on families, individuals, and retirees so that Wisconsin can be the best state in which to live, work, and retire.
Child Care Bills Pass Assembly
I was proud to vote for several pro-child, pro-family bills on the floor of the Assembly this week. The Choices in Child Care bill package that passed the Assembly makes several much-needed updates to Wisconsin’s child care system, including regulatory changes that will expand access to child care in the state. These bills are a sustainable and meaningful step in the right direction towards solving the child care issue in Wisconsin.

AB 391Â relating to updating rules regarding capacities for child care workers and children in group child care centers.
AB 392Â relating to increasing the number of children a certified child care provider may care for.
Nonpartisan Redistricting Solution Passes Assembly
This week the State Assembly offered a nonpartisan solution to redistricting for Wisconsin. Under the bill, the redistricting process would be done by the Legislative Reference Bureau, the nonpartisan agency that all legislators utilize for drafting their bills. The system we proposed is based off of the Iowa model, which has seen great success in nonpartisan redistricting for many years. The LRB issued a memo this week stating that the Wisconsin bill is as close to the Iowa model as constitutionally possible.
In 2020, 72% of voters in Brown County voted in favor of adopting a nonpartisan method of redistricting similar to Iowa’s. The proposal that came before the Assembly yesterday would bring the will of the voters into action and create a truly nonpartisan redistricting process – something that Republicans and Democrats should both get behind.
The proposal itself can be viewed here.
