The Future of Green Bay Correctional Institution (GBCI)
Earlier this month, the Governor proposed the beginnings of a plan to close Green Bay Correctional Institution (GBCI).
I have been communicating the unsafe, unsustainable reality of GBCI for almost a decade. I have promoted and provided multiple legislative options over the last eight years to close GBCI, including a proposal in 2017 to build a new maximum security facility in Northeast Wisconsin for approximately $275 million.
Unfortunately, leadership and decision-making delays have increased the risk, cost, and complexity of a solution, but we are finally in a position to work together and move forward. Governor Evers’ proposal will certainly require modifications to meet certain public safety needs; however, his efforts are a promising, positive first step toward the necessary and final closure of GBCI.
There will be more updates to come over the next few months as details are discussed and amended, and I’ll be sure to keep you informed on what is a promising development.
Hosting Local Officials
I had the opportunity this week to meet with local leaders from Brown County who highlighted varying issues facing the county and our shared constituents. I appreciate that they took the time to come to our State Capitol and discuss ongoing legislative activities and their impact on county functions.
It is beneficial as we work through the budget cycle to host organizations and governmental members with varying areas of expertise and advocacy. The state government is involved through funding and regulations with industries and municipalities throughout Wisconsin, and it’s important to maintain collaboration.
Local government officials and their state legislators share a duty to cooperate and ensure our constituents and the functions they rely on are operating accordingly. I am thankful that the 4th Assembly District has willing and active community leaders participating in the legislative process.
DNR Fisheries Management Spotlight Series
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Management Spotlight Series is hosting an informational meeting in our district.
- When: Monday, March 3rd from 6:00pm – 8:00pm
- Where: Green Bay DNR Service Center, 2984 Shawano Avenue Green Bay, WI 54313
At the meeting, a DNR Fisheries Biologist will present the history and management strategies for walleye and muskellunge in Green Bay. This will be followed by a detailed overview of new projects implemented in 2024 aimed at managing both species.
The discussed projects include a walleye reward tag study, during which over 4,500 walleyes were tagged in the Green Bay system in the spring of 2024. Additionally, new sampling methods and PIT tag initiatives for muskellunge will also be covered.
I encourage those interested to attend and learn more about the details behind our regional sporting heritage and how the tradition is preserved. The meeting can also be attended virtually. See more here:Â https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/
