Targeting a New Economy: Aviation
I was pleased to introduce legislation this week to make Wisconsin the potential national leader in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production. SAF is jet fuel made from renewable, often low-value, energy crops. The bill provides SAF producers a $1.50 per gallon tax credit to incentivize this multi-billion-dollar industry to take root in our state.
Wisconsin’s geographic location coupled with our strong agriculture sector perfectly positions our state to be a leader in producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel–which is a big win for our farmers and timber producers. Wisconsin produced SAF will create a new market for what are otherwise low-value crops. This fuel presents an exciting opportunity for our state to achieve two important goals: advance sustainable domestic energy and support our evolving farming and timber industries.
Under the proposal, to qualify for the credit the aviation fuel must be produced in Wisconsin and meet certain criteria, including at least 90% of the fuel being derived from renewable sources and crops being grown in the U.S. The credit would take effect in 2028.
Finding solutions to the many challenges facing our farmers and timber producers means taking advantage of key market opportunities. Tapping into Wisconsin’s multi-billion-dollar biofuels industry presents such an opportunity, and I’m excited to lead this effort.
The bill is now circulating for co-sponsorship support, and I’ll keep you updated as it moves through the legislative process.
Prized Experience for Young Students
I am always thankful to welcome schools from the 4th Assembly District when they visit the Capitol. This week, Forest Glen Elementary School from Howard was able to come visit Madison.
A total of 120 students participated in the state’s amazing tradition of hosting young learners. These students had a wonderful opportunity to learn about the civics of their state while exploring the stunning architecture that represents their home.
The tour staff does an excellent job presenting lawmaking procedures in a way that young students can understand, providing them with a fantastic experience and a first-hand view of the legislative process.
These students represent Wisconsin’s future, making these field trips ever so valuable for schools in the district and all across the state.
New Fishing License Season Begins
Early this week marked an important update for all anglers or anyone interested in new recreation. April marks the beginning of the 2025-2026 fishing license year and the regulations that come with it. Much of the general inland fishing season does not open until May 3rd, but there are still ample opportunities between now and then.
Those of you waiting to participate in a this activity can still take care of the license acquisition now as you gear up for the season. Given the year-round availability of many variations of fishing, I encourage you to learn more about these available waters and special county regulations at the link below.
