Congressman Tony Wied’s Update: May 23, 2025

This week, House Republicans achieved a major win for the American people by passing H.R. 1, our “One Big Beautiful Bill” that will enact President Trump’s agenda that you overwhelmingly voted for in November.

Over the last few months, House Republicans have worked hand in hand with President Trump to craft this bill that will extend tax cuts for hard-working families, secure our border, unleash American energy, protect Medicaid and SNAP for the most vulnerable Americans, and rein in out-of-control federal spending.

I was proud to support this bill, which will greatly benefit middle-class Americans and small businesses around this country. President Trump and Congressional Republicans were sent to Washington with a mandate to lead and we are making good on our promises to the American people.

Despite what you may have heard in the media, this bill is aimed at providing relief for hard-working Americans, securing our border, and getting our country back on a sound fiscal path.

The Democrats have been shouting for months that we are only going to “cut taxes for the wealthy.” Let me be very clear: that could not be further from the truth. If we did not pass this bill and extend President Trump’s tax cuts, the average working person in our district would see a tax increase of about $1600 next year. I could not allow that to happen. Unfortunately, every single House Democrat voted to give illegal aliens Medicaid and for the largest tax increase in American history by voting against this bill.

They have continuously said that we were going to “gut” Medicaid and other programs such as SNAP. That is false. We are committed to rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse in these programs so they can be preserved and strengthened for the vulnerable Americans they were always intended for.

This is a great step towards enacting President Trump’s agenda, and I look forward to continuing our work to Make America Great Again! I will continue to keep you updated on this process as it now heads to the Senate before it can be signed into law by President Trump.

Anchoring Support for Small Shipyards
As Congress continues crafting appropriations for 2026, I signed onto a bipartisan letter to the House Appropriations Committee in support of the Department of Transportation Maritime Administration Small Shipyard Grant Program. President Trump, along with leaders from both sides of the aisle, have called for renewed American leadership in shipbuilding so that America can continue to compete in global maritime markets. Small shipyards, including ours in Marinette and Sturgeon Bay, play a crucial role in maintaining and constructing vessels that are vital for transportation safety and law enforcement capabilities on the Great Lakes, inland waterways, and global waters. However, they face significant challenges, including capacity limitations and workforce shortages that lead to longer wait times and decreased efficiency. The Small Shipyard Grant Program is uniquely positioned to help small shipyards modernize their equipment and facilities and provide employee training initiatives that promote technical skills and increase workforce productivity. I was proud to join my colleagues in support of this critical program to support shipyards, equipment manufacturers, and the many different industries that play a role in supporting our maritime industrial base. Small Business, Big Impact: Celebrating Small Business Success
I was proud to welcome BenShot, a small business from Appleton, to the 2nd Annual Small Business Showcase in Washington DC. This showcase, hosted by the House Committee on Small Business, allows small business owners from around the country an opportunity to display their products and share their stories with policymakers. This year there were over twenty participating businesses! In addition to learning about their stories, we discussed many of the important tax provisions included in House Republicans’ “Big Beautiful Bill” that will help unleash the full potential of Main Street America. Guests at the showcase included the Administrator of the Small Business Administration Kelly Loeffler, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, and House Small Business Committee Chairman Roger Williams. I am already looking forward to next year’s showcase and meeting more of these incredible entrepreneurs!

Cultivating Care: Bringing Food Aid back to USDA

This week, I was proud to cosponsor H.R. 1207, which would move the duties of the Food for Peace Program from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to its rightful place at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Like many other directly food-related foreign assistance programs, the Agriculture Appropriations bill provides funding and USDA administers those funds. It only makes sense that the agency that administers the funds also manages the program. Food for Peace is a program that began in 1954 and provides emergency and long-term aid to address hunger and food insecurity worldwide. Click here to learn more about this legislation.

NEW Water and Happy Wastewater Professionals Appreciation Day
On Thursday, Wisconsin celebrated Wastewater Professionals Appreciation Day, a special thanks to all who serve in that critical role and ensure clean water for our communities. I recently toured NEW Water that has been serving Northeast Wisconsin for over 90 years. As the brand of the Green Bay Metropolitan Sewerage District, NEW Water treats an average of 41 million gallons of wastewater every day – they shared an anecdote that this is enough water to fill Lambeau Field every week. The team at NEW Water supports everything from flushing toilets to running local businesses throughout Northeast Wisconsin. I’m grateful for their team working around the clock to keep our communities clean, safe, and running smoothly. Thank you to the entire NEW Water team for your hard work!

Visit to the Medical College of Wisconsin – Green Bay (MCW) Campus
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the Medical College of Wisconsin – Green Bay, located on the St. Norbert College Campus in De Pere. It was great to meet Campus Dean Dr. Matthew Hunsaker and Assistant Deans Dr. Craig Hanke and Dr. Erin Green. During my visit, I learned about the history of the Green Bay campus, the outstanding educational services that they provide to medical students, and how many students who graduate from MCW stay right here in Wisconsin to practice as physicians. Thank you to MCW-Green Bay for having me and for your leadership!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Wisconsin
I recently had a great conversation with the team at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Wisconsin. Their work to build strong, one-on-one mentoring relationships is making a significant difference in the lives of young people across Northeast Wisconsin. I’m grateful for the dedicated staff and volunteers who continue to invest in the next generation and help strengthen the fabric of our communities.

Photo of the Week
We have received so many wonderful pictures since we launched the Photo of the Week section of the Wied Wire, and I would love to see more. This week’s photo is of of Randy Thiry of Casco, WI who lost his son CPL Jesse Thiry in the Iraq War in August of 2004. This weekend, it is important to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Their sacrifices have allowed us all to enjoy the many freedoms we take for granted today. While many are entering an extended weekend, please take a moment to reflect on these fallen servicemembers and keep their memory in your heart.. If you would like to submit a picture to be featured in our Photo of the Week section, please email it to twstaff@mail.house.gov with your name and location.
