19th Senate District Update: June 13, 2025

I hope you had a good week, and Happy Father’s Day to all the great dads out there!

This week, the Senate Mental Health Committee held a public hearing on proposals that would provide grants to improve mental health services. We were also able to gather information on better ways we can serve other mental health needs folks have, including through telehealth and helping resolve transportation issues.

I also testified on two bills in the Assembly Education Committee. Senate Bill 11 would allow certain federally chartered youth organizations, like the Scouts and Future Farmers of America, to have better access to schools for recruitment opportunities. These organizations, despite being chartered by the federal government, have had increasing difficulty accessing public schools, resulting in declining enrollment. The other bill, Senate Bill 10, is very similar to Senate Bill 11, but instead of youth organizations, this bill allows for military recruiters to have the same meaningful recruitment access as other organizations that interact with students during their already allowable recruitment opportunities.

We were able to meet with quite a few people as well, including folks from the Farm Bureau Federation, assisted living referral agencies, and Philip Morris International. In these meetings, we discussed legislative priorities for our farmers, working through potential solutions to get assisted living referral legislation over the finish line, and talking about tobacco alternative product legislation to help more people quit smoking.

I also had the pleasure of talking with many folks around our area about upcoming events, issues they are facing, and more!

Happy Flag Day and happy birthday to the U.S. Army, which celebrates its 250th year! I hope you enjoy your weekend!

Happy Father's Day!
