Last week, Green Bay recorded the worst air quality in the country due to wayward wildfire smoke from blazes in central Canada. This is the third summer in a row where Canadian wildfires have blanketed Northeastern Wisconsin in smoke, disrupting daily life and threatening the health of our communities. The cause is largely due to Canada’s lack of active forest management, which has been proven to reduce the risk of wildfires.
In response to this, I wrote a letter to Canadian Ambassador to the United States Kirsten Hillman, urging swift action from their government to mitigate these wildfires. From sore throats and asthma flare-ups to canceled outdoor events and hazy skies, the impact is real and deeply felt. Local businesses that rely on summer tourism, such as campgrounds, resorts, and outdoor recreation, have reported declines in visitors due to persistent smoke and air quality warnings. Residents of Northeast Wisconsin should not have to bear the consequences of poor forest management across the border.
Active forest management is a proven method of mitigating the risk and magnitude of wildfires, while simultaneously maintaining or enhancing ecosystem health and resilience to future fires. I implore them to use every means at their disposal to prevent these fires in the future. Otherwise, this trend will only continue to worsen, threatening populations on both sides of the border.
The United States and Canada have a longstanding congenial relationship, and it is my hope that this issue can be addressed quickly and collaboratively. I look forward to receiving a response and, as always, I will keep you updated.
Thank you for starting your weekend off with us. I hope you enjoy this week’s edition of The Wied Wire.

Recognizing Small Firearms Manufacturers in August
To commemorate August 2025 as National Shooting Sports Month, I was proud to introduce a resolution honoring small firearms manufacturers, alongside Senator Risch (R-ID). These small manufacturers provide hundreds of thousands of American jobs and contribute tens of billions of dollars to our economy. Unfortunately, under the previous administration, they were burdened with excessive regulations and subjected to increased scrutiny from an openly anti–Second Amendment agenda. As a member of the House Committee on Small Business, I’m committed to supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses like these—and to ensuring this constitutionally protected industry is not targeted by future anti–Second Amendment administrations. I’m honored to have the support of both the National Shooting Sports Foundation and the National Rifle Association for this resolution.

Third-generation Family Business: B&D Warehouse, Inc.
I recently had the opportunity to visit B&D Warehouse, Inc. located in Green Bay. [See featured photo above.] I met with President/Owner Tim Daanen who owns and operates the third-generation family business that stores products for key industries like paper, cheese, and lumber. I enjoyed the opportunity to tour their 325,000 square-foot facility and to witness their continued growth. It’s great to see how small businesses right here in Northeast Wisconsin work together to serve our communities.
Suamico Kwik Trip Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
A member of my staff attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for a new Kwik Trip location in the Village of Suamico. Recently, Kwik Trip was recognized as a top workplace in Northeast Wisconsin based on employee feedback. I wish them the best as they continue to grow and provide clean and reliable stops across the state. My staff was proud to recognize the hard work of the Kwik Trip team and the local leadership in Suamico who played a part in making this project happen!
John H. Bradley VA Clinic Dedication
A member of my staff attended the plaque dedication ceremony at the John H. Bradley VA Clinic in Appleton. The ceremony honored a new display dedicated to the clinic’s namesake. John H. Bradley served as a Navy Corpsman and combat medic during the Battle of Iwo Jima and his bravery earned him the Navy Cross. The new display and plaque is placed in a prominent area of the clinic that will honor the Appleton-native and his service during World War II. I want to thank all of the men and women who have and are serving our country for their bravery and sacrifice.
