19th Senate District Update: October 17, 2025

It was great to join a bipartisan coalition of legislators, advocates, and their families this week to discuss the importance of passing Gail’s Law!

Happy Friday! This was a busy week, both in Madison and back home in our area.

In Madison, the Senate was in session to vote on a number of important bills. I am proud to report we passed several critical measures that will positively impact Wisconsinites, including legislation banning non-educational cell phone use in schools and a bill to allow out-of-state telehealth providers to offer their services to patients in Wisconsin.

I am especially pleased that Gail’s Law passed the Senate, as it will improve health outcomes for the forty percent of women in Wisconsin who have dense breast tissue, all while honoring Gail’s memory. This proposal would ensure these women receive the screenings they need to detect breast cancer, and you can read more about it here.

With the passage of Gail’s Law in the Senate, the bill immediately began its work through the Assembly, starting with a public hearing in the Assembly Health Committee, where I was happy to advocate for its swift passage.

Additionally, the Senate University and Technical Colleges Committee held a public hearing this week for two of my key initiatives. The first is Senate Bill 498, the UW free speech bill, which would guarantee free speech at all publicly funded colleges and universities in the state. The second is Senate Bill 501, which would establish a veterinary loan repayment grant program. This program is designed to attract and retain veterinarians—especially those who work with larger domesticated animals—in the rural communities that need them most. Finally, I was honored to spend time celebrating Waupaca County Sheriff Wilz and Deputy Wenzel during First Responders Day at the Capitol.

Back in our area, we attended the dedication of the UW-Oshkosh Kolf Sports Center, a wonderful new addition to my alma mater’s campus. We also met with constituents to discuss crucial issues facing the district, specifically prison reform and the election process. Looking ahead, I am excited about two great community events happening this Saturday: the Wautoma Police Department’s Breast Cancer Brat Fry Fundraiser and the Pumpkin Hike in Waupaca.

I also wanted to highlight an opportunity that came across my desk this week: The Home Depot is offering free trades training for those interested in preparing for a career in the skilled trades—please click the link to learn more. Finally, if you haven’t checked it out yet, don’t miss the Fall Color Report! Most of our district should see peak color between the third week of October and the first week of November.

I hope you have a great weekend!
