Science, Technology, and AI Committee
This week, the Science, Technology, and AI Committee held an informational hearing on demystifying artificial intelligence and the growth of data centers in Wisconsin, with a particular focus on their impact on water, the environment, and energy use. We heard from 18 organizations, including Vantage Data Centers, Microsoft, Ark Data, and Clean Wisconsin, who provided valuable insights on how these technologies are shaping our state’s future.
It was encouraging to learn that the water impact of data centers is minimal, as many operate with closed-loop cooling systems and even utilize Wisconsin’s cold ambient air for temperature control. Additionally, the Public Service Commission has approved the tariffs, ensuring that energy rates will not increase as a result of data center development.
Overall, it was a productive and informative discussion about balancing innovation with sustainability — and I look forward to continuing this important conversation.
