19th Senate District Update: February 6, 2026

Happy Friday!

This was another crazy busy and productive week in the Legislature, filled with a full schedule of discussions on legislation, a Senate Health Committee hearing, and numerous meetings both in Madison and beyond.

We began the week in the Capitol by hosting several advocacy groups for thoughtful and productive conversations about ongoing legislation and future initiatives. Among the organizations represented were UW-Madison, Trout Unlimited, the Alzheimer’s Association, Auto Innovators, and WisconsinEye. I also participated in the Senate Agriculture and Revenue Executive Session, where the committee heard testimony on the bill regarding age restrictions for hemp products, which Wisconsin does not currently have. Later that day, I had the opportunity to sit down with ABC 27 News to discuss my autonomous driving legislation and the potential benefits it could bring to Wisconsin.

On Wednesday, the Assembly Health Committee held a public hearing on several important bills moving through the process. One of those was my proposal, Senate Bill 898, which would add two pharmacy technicians to the Pharmacy Examining Board. This meaningful change would bring valuable frontline practical expertise to the board, promote more inclusive and informed decision-making, and better reflect the collaborative reality of modern pharmacy teams—where technicians now perform a substantial share of the technical work that allows pharmacists to focus on clinical responsibilities and direct patient care. That same day, we joined the annual American Heart Association Heart Month event, which highlighted the importance of healthy heart habits and the life-saving value of CPR training and ready access to AEDs.

Thursday brought a public hearing in the Senate Health Committee, where we considered my bill that would clarify who has the authority to provide proof of an excused absence in schools to health care providers with advanced training. The legislation recognizes that while registered nurses are highly skilled professionals who provide excellent patient care, they are generally not authorized to independently diagnose medical conditions without oversight from a higher-credentialed provider. Aligning documentation authority with diagnostic authority helps ensure consistency, clarity, and appropriate oversight in these situations.

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead!
