THE CITY COUNCIL NEXT MEETS ON APRIL 21 and 22, 2026.

Racism in Northern Wisconsin

Wisconsin Outdoor News published an article written by Doug Etten titled LdF bans all walleye and muskie fishing by non-tribal members. According to the article:

“The Lac du Flambeau Chippewa tribe is banning the fishing of walleye and muskie by non-tribal members on a number of lakes inside the reservation, located about 10 miles west of Woodruff.”

Can anyone become a tribal member? If not, what is being a tribal member based on? Paying dues? Income level? Or might membership be based SOLELY ON RACE? So, what we might have here is an organized group of people denying access and service to others solely based on an individual’s race. Is not that the very definition of racial discrimination? According to Wikipedia:

Racial discrimination is any discrimination against any individual on the basis of their race, ancestry, ethnic or national origin, and/or skin color and hair texture. Individuals discriminate by refusing to do business with, socialize with, or share resources with people of a certain group.

Who knew? The fact is that EVERYBODY, including the Chippewa tribe, knew that this act of racial discrimination is by definition, racist. And apparently they just don’t care. They don’t care about the individuals who might own or visit properties on the lakes in question. They don’t care about the economic impact caused by the reduction in tourism and property values hurting local businesses; those very businesses on which tribal members also depend. And most importantly, they don’t care because they know that they will get away with it.

The “friends” of the tribes, those who expand tribal casino operations at every turn, those in the Governor’s office, the Assembly, the Senate, the DOJ, AND the Wisconsin State Supreme Court won’t lift a finger in opposition. To them, the tribes and their donations are sacred and above criticism.

I wonder where the Governor and those elected officials from the Minocqua area will be fishing on Opening Day? Lake Geneva, perhaps?
