New Fuel Production Credit Receives Hearing
This week, I testified in favor of a bill I authored with Senator Romaine Quinn (R-Birchwood) that will pave the way for Wisconsin to become a national leader in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production. Assembly Bill 222 will provide Wisconsin SAF producers a $1.50 per-gallon tax credit. SAF is jet fuel made from renewable, often low-value, feedstock. Under this proposal, to qualify for the credit, the fuel must be produced in Wisconsin, derived largely from renewable sources, and feedstocks must be grown or produced in the U.S. The credit will take effect in 2028.
Wisconsin produced SAF presents an exciting new market opportunity for our farmers and timber producers, as incentivizing this multi-billion-dollar industry to flourish here will be a big win for our heritage industries. Capitalizing on our state’s geographic location and economic sectors will allow us to become a leader in producing this sustainable fuel, which ultimately creates a long-term, reliable market for our farmers and timber producers. I am thrilled to see this legislation move forward. The bill is now available for a committee vote before moving ahead in the legislative process.
“RFK Jr. Act” Passes Through Legislature
The Senate Committee on Licensing, Regulatory Reform, State and Federal Affairs heard my testimony this week on AB 35, the “Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Act.” The bill creates a pathway for various candidates at the state and federal levels to stop their names from appearing on Wisconsin ballots if they have suspended their campaigns.
As exposed in the 2024 election cycle, our current law is out of touch with real-world circumstances that impact a candidate’s desire to continue through Election Day, causing increased voter confusion. Most states avoid this scenario by having a pathway in place for candidates to remove their name from the ballot.
The legislation creates a clear timeline and set of requirements for candidates to meet if they no longer want their name to appear on the ballot. A candidate would be required to submit a sworn and verified statement to the Wisconsin Elections Commission attesting that they are withdrawing their candidacy. They must also adhere to a strict deadline when filing this statement and must pay a processing fee for this service.
The State Assembly passed the proposal earlier this year, and it is now available for a Senate committee vote before proceeding in the legislative process.
