Question of the Week
In lieu of a Question of the Week, please take a moment to thank our Veterans and all those currently serving in the U.S. Military. Their dedication and service to our country are truly appreciated.
Assembly Bill 354
This week, the Assembly Committee on State Affairs held a public hearing on Assembly Bill 354, which relates to the timing of equalization aid payments to school districts.
Currently, the Department of Public Instruction distributes equalization aid to school districts in four unequal installments: 15% in September, 25% in December, 25% in March, and 35% in June. This distribution pattern forces school districts to wait until the end of the fiscal year to receive the largest portion of their aid, which can create unnecessary cash flow challenges and complicate local budgeting.
Distributing equalization aid more evenly supports responsible fiscal planning at the district level and helps reduce reliance on short-term borrowing. It maintains full funding levels while improving cash flow for schools—making this change both fiscally responsible and educationally supportive.
We had many speakers come in to testify in support of this bill, highlighting the benefits it would bring to school districts across Wisconsin. Thank you to Chair Swearingen for holding the hearing, and I look forward to the committee’s upcoming executive session on this bill.

SS Edmund Fitzgerald
Monday marked the 50th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. We remember and honor the 29 crew members who lost their lives that tragic night.
Over the past half century, the story of the Fitzgerald has become part of Great Lakes legend—an enduring reminder of the power and peril of the inland seas.
