4th Assembly District Update: June 9, 2023

Poll Shows Support for Choice & Charter School Funding

A recent poll conducted by the WMC foundation revealed that a majority of Wisconsinites support school choice.

recent poll conducted by the WMC foundation revealed that a majority of Wisconsinites support school choice. Of the individuals surveyed, 70% said they support school choice, 63% percent support expanding school choice, and 59% said they support narrowing the funding gap between public, choice, and charter schools.

Parents and students deserve the freedom to choose the type of school that works best for them. That’s why a majority of Wisconsinites agree that funding for students should be equitable, regardless of what type of school they attend.

Transparency in Government Programs

This week I testified on a bill I’m working on with Senator Rachael Cabral-Guevara that would rename the “Earned Income Tax Credit” to the “Earned Income Child Care Tax Credit” to better reflect the intent of the credit. I believe that the work we do as legislators should result in clear, precise laws that are understandable to the average Wisconsinite. The change I’m proposing is a small one, but the principle behind it remains at the core of my legislative ethic.

Making the Penalty Fit the Crime

State Rep. David Steffen discusses fentanyl deaths.

On Wednesday, the Assembly passed SB 101, which increases the penalty for causing a death through distribution of drugs. Under current state law, the penalty for this crime is a Class C felony. This bill raises the penalty to a Class B felony, which is the same penalty for all other forms of first-degree reckless homicide. Penalties in law should fit the nature of the crime. I was proud to vote for this bill on the floor of the Assembly because it provides prosecutors with more tools to deliver justice for the victims of drug-related deaths. With fentanyl deaths on the rise, it’s time we take this crime more seriously.
