Could another really big nail just have been driven into the coffin of Data Centers? Last week Apple announced that they will start to manufacture Mac Minis at their facility in Houston. This is all a part of Apple’s announced $600Billion investment in American manufacturing, which will help to secure America’s AI technology. But “How does that affect Data Centers?” you might ask.
It has been professed for some time that today’s Data Centers, covering hundreds of acres and costing $Billions, can be replaced with a series of Mac Minis occupying a building the size of a Taco Bell. Is Apple preparing to break away from the ‘Big Tech’ cabal and cash in all by themselves? Something like this was bound to happen. That’s how markets work. And in this case Gordon Gekko was right; “Greed is good!” And what happens after today’s data centers are replaced by Mac Mini’s in smaller, more localized systems? Does Apple next put the AI technology on your i-Phone? When was the last time you went to a Photo Mat?
Capitalism is driven by competition, which is driven by higher performance and lower costs. The article written by Max Hartshorne The Little Box that Threatens Everything AI strongly suggests that the market-driven evolution of AI Data Centers into something else may have very negative financial effects. Regarding the $Billions BORRROWED AND INVESTED in Data Centers, Mr. Hartshorne asks the question, “…. what happens if all this investment doesn’t get paid back?”
Mr. Hartshorne goes on to make the case that people may not be willing to pay for AI services and used himself as an example. He likes and uses AI, but he’s not willing to buy the premium package. How many of you PAY for AI? Then he says:
“And here’s where my mind keeps drifting: the little Apple Mac mini. It’s the size of a club sandwich, but it’s a giant killer in the making.
It’s small, and costs less than a weekend getaway. Yet it can already run surprisingly capable AI models locally. No cloud. No subscription. No data center. Just a little box doing the work. And every month, those local models get better. Faster. More efficient. More “good enough” for everyday tasks.”
Hartshorne’s point (and mine) is that sometime in the not-to-distant future you will be able to do AI functions on your phone. Huge Data Centers will be dead, and someone will be responsible for both the lost investments AND the Clean-Up Costs. Who will be responsible? Take a look in the mirror. Nvidia and Oracle are too big to fail.
And let’s not forget all of the infrastructure costs for the projected power demand of the giant Data Centers. You’ll pay for that too with your quadrupled electric bill.
