Summertime in Wisconsin is the season of fairs, festivals, and farmer markets.
Wisconsin agriculture is impossible to avoid this time of year. Fields are green, corn is reaching towards the sky, cows are grazing, and our Dairy-Air floats across pastures, hovers over roadways, and clings to our noses! Wisconsin agriculture contributes $104.8 billion annually to our state’s economy. This summer, when you are visiting your fair, festival, or farmer’s market, give a heartfelt ‘thanks’ to the farmers and to our younger citizens participating in the agricultural sciences of 4-H.
Facts about agriculture in Wisconsin:
- Agriculture contributes over $100 billion to Wisconsin’s economy,
- Provides over half a million jobs for WI residents,
- WI is a top producer of many agricultural products, including cheese, cranberries, and ginseng, among others,
- Farmers are important stewards of our natural resources, including land and water conservation efforts.
Earlier this this year, I met with a few members from the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation and discussed the importance of investments in rural infrastructure and the value our State farmers provide to Wisconsin and the nation.
In addition to aforementioned agriculture funding, the budget also includes:
- An additional $50,000 per year for Wisconsin Agriculture in the Classroom program,
- $70,000 per year for livestock premises registration,
- $22,176,500 in funding for county conservation departments,
- $3 million reallocated to fund the Food and Farm Exploration Center in Plover, WI.
