Colleges and Universities Committee
The Colleges and Universities Committee held a public hearing this week on the following bills.
AB 551- A k-12, UW-System or technical college student has a right to exercise freedom of speech and of the press in school-sponsored media regardless of whether the school-sponsored media is supported financially by the school, uses the facilities of the school, or is produced in conjunction with a course in which the student is enrolled.
AB553- Establishes certain standards related to free speech and academic freedom at University of Wisconsin System institutions and technical colleges. For violation of these standards, the Board of Regents of the UW System or technical college district board may be subject to a civil cause of action and must provide certain notice of the violation. This bill also establishes certain due process standards in disciplinary proceedings for violation of these standards.
AB 545- This bill requires that technical college district board members also be United States citizens.
AB 554- This bill changes certain race-based programs or requirements in higher education. The bill modifies these programs and requirements so they apply to disadvantaged students rather than minority students.
